How to Know When a Sorority House is Right For You by Lindsay Weinberg for HerCampus.com

How did our President Anasazi and Historian Hannah know Sigma was right for them? Our Vice President Lindsay, who spent the summer in Boston interning for HerCampus magazine, had a chance to interview both women about their experiences during recruitment:

"I would advise incoming freshmen to pick a house that they feel comfortable in. One that they know they can be themselves in,” says Hannah Wren, a senior at UCLA who is in the sorority Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi. Hannah was previously a member of two Panhellenic sororities, and she knows that feeling like you belong is really important in choosing your new family.

Her sorority sister agrees. “No matter what type of sorority you are rushing, the most important thing to consider when picking a chapter is to get a feel for where you feel most comfortable and where you have a genuine connection with the women of that chapter,” says Anasazi Levy, President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi at UCLA. “That connection is what makes the sisterhood of a sorority so life-changing.”

Meet Sister of the Week, Sarah Kaster!
Major: Psychology

Past Sigma Positions: Pledge Mom and Sunshine Chair
We are so sad that Sarah is going to be leaving us in a couple of weeks, but we know she has a bright future ahead of her! Here is a little bit about her.

Why did you join Sigma?
I joined Sigma my freshman year because I was drawn to everyone’s dedication and passion for school. I thought Sigma would be a great way to build my awareness of UCLA and how classes work through the connections I made with my sisters.

What is your favorite Sigma memory?
This year’s senior night at Skylight Gardens is definitely a favorite memory.

What are your plans after graduation?
I am in the middle of applying for grad school for a Master’s in Psychology or Security Studies.

What is a fun fact about yourself?
My favorite movie is Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Meet sister of the week, Rachel Beyda!
Rachel Beyda is a fourth year economics major, and is graduating this spring. Sigma will miss you, Rachel!

What are your plans after graduation?

“I will be attending Stanford Law School in the fall. I have always wanted to be an attorney, and could not be more excited to continue exploring my passion for the law.”

Why did you join Sigma?

“The sisters I met were so genuine and fun to be around. I became close with several girls during rush, and wanted to continue spending time with them. Sure enough, Sigma turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding parts of my college experience.”

What is your favorite Sigma memory/what will you miss the most about Sigma?

“One memory that stands out is the beach bonfire that Sigma had when I was a freshman. We spent the evening laughing, bonding, and eating marshmallows (my favorite)! As for what I’ll miss the most about Sigma, I will definitely miss seeing the sisters all the time. Come visit me!!”

What are your current Sigma positions and what positions have you done in the past? What makes being a Sigma leader special?

“From 2015-2016, I served as Sigma’s President. I have also been Vice President, Social Chair, Recruitment Chair, Health Chair, Greek Week Chair, Paraphernalia Chair, Date Party Chair, and am currently serving as Member at Large.”

What is a fun fact about you?
“I used to be a competitive dancer. While I do not train anymore, you can still find me getting my groove on at Sigma date parties!”

Meet sister of the week, Lindsay Weinberg!
Lindsay is the vice president and sisterhood chair of Sigma. She is a third year, communications major and environmental systems and society minor.

What other extra-curricular activities are you involved in outside of Sigma?
L.W. I am the president of the number one online magazine for college women, Her Campus. I am also an A+E editor for the Daily Bruin, a marketing representative for the New York Times, and a member of Hillel’s Jewish Learning Fellowship.

What are your plans after graduation?
L.W. I want to stay in L.A. and pursue journalism or work in public policy/government. I am also interested in getting a master’s.

Why did you join Sigma?
L.W. My freshman year, I got a Facebook message from one of the girls. I saw that their first rush event was a hike to the Hollywood sign, which was something I always wanted to do. All of the girls were so nice, and no one was fake. I thought Sigma would be a great way to bridge my interest in Judaism and making new friends.

What is your favorite Sigma memory?
L.W. My retreat my first year at Newport Beach was so much fun. In general, I love all of the sisterhood bonding events because I get to hang out with all of my sisters.

What is a fun fact about you?
L.W. I spent my last two summers in Paris and Japan. I was in Paris studying abroad, and in Japan I was teaching English.
